Branding & Website Prototype
Mallrat is a mall culture pop-up shop inspired by the 90s and early 2000s. The pop-up shop includes food, music, movies, fashion, and an arcade. The branding is based on bright bold colors, low-res computer screens, and retro fashion. The event website has an experimental layout resembling old desktop computers.
The 90s and early 2000s had a distinctive and bright style. Blue, green, orange, pink, and yellow were especially popular especially within fashion, with influences from pop art and comic books. The overall windows for each tab was heavily inspired by MacOS from the 90s, and MS Paint was appropriated to MR (Mallrat) Paint as a splash page. The color swatches also act as a way to change the desktop background, and it refers back to the customizable aspect of sparkly or flame cursors many people used.
A sitemap was developed to organize how the mini-site functioned. Originally, the pages of the site acted more like a traditional website, but since the splash page that functions as the home page allowed for more experimentation, the navigation system and pop-up pages mimic the experience of using a desktop. After the wireframe was developed, the branding was applied. Each element of the website was hand drawn or image treated to give a pixel effect.
